Permanent Deacons ordained by Archbishop Kevin McDonald of Southwark, at, St George's Cathedral,  Southwark, London
on Saturday June 10th 2006.

Five new permanent deacons were ordained by Archbishop Kevin on Saturday, 10th June, at the Cathedral.

Father Peter Edwards, Diocesan Director for the Permanent Diaconate, presented the candidates to him:

James Friedenthal from Lewisham,
Michael Kennedy from Battersea West,
Sean Murphy from Beckenham,
John Sampson from New Malden and
Malcolm Turner from Strood.

In his homily, the Archbishop referred to Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love), and explained that ‘diaconia’, the ministry of charity, became part of the fundamental structure of the Church. He said: ‘Diaconal service is integral to the whole life of the Church and I would say that the order of deacons is the privileged institutional focus and expression of that crucial dimension of Christian life’.

This occasion was also the opportunity for the deacons of the diocese – some ordained for over 25 years – to renew their commitment to diaconal service and to welcome their new brother deacons.
